Getting Started
The best place to begin in your understanding of the GII is to read the original journal article Measuring the Image of God: The God Image Inventory and the God Image Scales (PDF - 125k) published in the Journal of Psychology and Theology in 1997 and the GII entry in Hill, P. C., & Hood, R. W., Jr. (Eds.). (1999) Measures of religiosity (PDF - 52k). A brief synopsis of Dr. Ana Marie Rizzuto's theory, which is foundational to the development of the GII, is found in her presentation on "Distinguishing Between the Concept and Image of God."(PDF - 196k | HTML - 34k)

In order to view these PDF files you must have Adobe Acrobat Reader installed. It is recommended that you print the article out for reading and reference offline at your convenience as the material covered there-in will be the primary source for the your evaluation questions.

Key Concepts
What to look for while reading the article:
  • What is the God image and what is it composed of?
  • The difference between God image and God concept.
  • The relationship between God image and self image.
  • What is the basis of the GII scales?
  • What GII scales displayed the most distinction in factor structure?
  • What are the proposed uses of GII?
  • How is the GIS different from the GII?

Supplemental Reading
For a deeper exploration of God Image, and the theories behind it, please consider reading the books referred to in the References section of the above article, especially those by Rizzuto, Winnicott and Bowlby. If it is of interest to you, you may also read the dissertation that this website was created for. Developing a Web-based Scoring Program for the God Image Inventory by Jay Gattis, Psy.D.
